Summary of 2017

- How was the gaming year according to Zonezter

We saw Nintendo releasing a new console. They continue to baffle us with unique products. As we moved into December it was said that they had sold more than 10 million consoles. They managed to do that despite not having the Christmas holidays to boost their sales. To compare the numbers to something. Sony did sell about as many consoles when the PlayStation 4 was released, during the same amount of time. But Sony had the Christmas holidays within that period. How many parents will buy a Switch to their kids?

When we remember 2017. Nintendo will be a big part of it with franchises like Zelda and Mario releasing new titles. When a new console is released, there are always people getting a bad copy. Add the fact that we have Internet and you can understand that small issues with a console release might create a giant shit storm. That is basically what started to happen at the beginning. Later on I haven't really heard anything major regarding the Nintendo Switch. I guess that they managed to release this odd console without any major problems.

Do I have to explain the Nintendo Switch? Well, just to summarize how this have changed the world of gaming. Since March of 2017 commuters all over the world can now play a game like Zelda on their TV-monitor during the evening. The following morning when heading off to school or work, they can just pick up where they left off. That's right. The same game, on a handheld. Yes, like I have said since the release. They won't compete with Sony or Microsoft based on powerful graphics. But the graphics on the Nintendo Switch is definitely enough to entertain us. If you don't believe me. Just Youtube Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Now I am just speculating regarding the future. I know this is supposed to be a recap of what has happened. But listen to this idea. Future console releases will feature some sort of handheld option. I don't think that Sony and Microsoft will go as far as Nintendo did with the Switch. But I think that there might come some sort of handheld device that will allow you to bring your normal game onto the train or bus. Sony have been having handheld devices before. Perhaps they will be able to downgrade the graphics on a small monitor, making it good enough.

I made a list. I made a list of games that was big releases. If I have added a game that was originally released previously it is probably because it got released on a new platform during 2017 and therefore show in searches of games being released during 2017. I have probably missed a few even. I have certainly added some games that are not considered to be big releases.

It is my list, okay?!

Some titles are self explanatory. Some titles are explained a bit and some releases will have a comment connected to it.

Releases during 2017

Resident Evil 7

This took horror to a whole new level. It is a classic Resident Evil horror game. It can be played in virtual reality! This is the game I wasted most money on during the entire year. I paid more than 60 euros and I have barely played 15 minutes so far.

Conan: Exiles

Do you still remember this game? All the focus were coming from the genitals being shown on your character. Great physics engine. They moved as you walked, jumped or whatever dirty move you came up with.

Hitman: The Complete First Season

Will there ever be a second?

This was a title given the attribute “launch exclusive” for PlayStation 4. What a joke. It later got released for PC as well. Enough with the useless exclusivity.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

This was one of the big games for PlayStation 4 before it was released. The hype was big. Only thing that was hyped more was the next game on this list.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

This game was hyped beyond hyped. Needless to say, it was disappointing on release.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Thimbleweed Park

Funny story. This was a game I mentioned a long time before it was released. I said it looked freaking awesome. A really odd story etc. Then Bas calls me up and tells me this game was released and got good reviews. Not a big expensive production I guess. But it is games like this one that makes me believe in the business of developing video games. I like the funny stuff!

The Sexy Brutale

Speaking of funny stuff. This is a whack game. A puzzle game where you rewind time in order to solve murders. Check out the trailer. I enjoyed this game a lot even though I never finished all of it.

The space horror game that everyone talked about on release. Some weird monsters looking like regular objects. Scary shit. As far as I know it became dull after a while. Have you played it? It was something a lot of people talked about during 2017 and that is why it is on this list.

Injustice 2

The fighting game that does not only have a great 1v1 fighting system. This game apparently have a solid single player story mode. Bas is the one here at Zonezter that enjoy fighting games and he speaks highly of this game.

Friday the 13th: The Game

Sounded really interesting. Have not really hit the top lists after release however. What happened? A game where one of you are the famous Jason and he will track you down and kill you. Sound like a game that could be fun between friends.

Splatoon 2

A shooter for Nintendo Switch that got 83 in score on Metacritic. I honestly don't know that much about it besides the fact that we have talked about it being hyped. A shooter that is sort of child friendly since they shoot paint, I guess.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

There is no Nintendo console without one of these titles, are there? The success is back.

A release that cost money while being early access, that will become free in the future? How is that selling so well?

ARK: Survival Evolved

The constant early access game finally got a release date it seems. When will they fix all the bugs though?

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

A game that is supposed to be perfect for commuting according to Zonezter's very own Bas.

XCOM2: War of the Chosen

An expansion pack, yes. But it is not any expansion. It adds content to one of the big games out there.

Destiny 2

It finally arrived.

LEGO Worlds

Minecraft got competition. I don't think that this game became an instant success but it is LEGO. One of the most successful brands in the world. Never underestimate them.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

The successor of a legendary game. I have heard great things.

Southpark: The Fractured But Whole

They are back. They had a busy year, with this game and a mobile release as well.

Fallout 4 VR

I am amazed how happy people are with this game. The hype was monumental. When the expectations are sky high, it usually means that it will not be received very well. There was bugs at launch, forcing you to download a patch through Steam.

Raw Data

This is a game that showed us various ways to use virtual reality. They brought guns, rifles, bows and swords. All that into the same game. We had the pleasure to review this game when it was released.

PUBG (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds)

Assassin's Creed Origins

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Super Mario Odyssey

Call of Duty: WWII

Doom VFR

As we hyped VR and the potential it has. Doom VFR was one of the big titles that we said had to carry the technology forward. A failed release would damage the entire technology. As the release came, a lot of the excitement had disappeared. A review score of 71 on metacritic is not a disaster. It sort of faded away. Doom in VR does automatically have issues. A fast paced shooter will automatically have to slow down when it arrives for VR. You can't move as fast using teleport in VR as you can if you play with a keyboard and mouse.

Star Wars Battlefront II

As soon as I purchased my PlayStation 4. I purchased the first game in this series. It was not what I expected. On PS4 this release got a 68. I'd say that with the advertisement this game had prior to its release, the score is below par.

Games with an annual release are not on this list. We all knew that they were coming and what to expect.
